What is Romana’s Pilates?

Romana’s Pilates is the most authentic continuation of the original Classical Pilates method created by Joseph Pilates. Rooted in the philosophy of Contrology, the method focuses on precision, alignment, breath, core strength, and purposeful movement to build a balanced and connected body.

Romana Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilates’ direct protégé, dedicated her life to preserving and teaching the original method exactly as it was intended. Through generations of master teachers including Sari Mejia Santo and Cynthia Shipley of LifeSpan Pilates in New York City, the authentic tradition continues today.

Using the original apparatus and classical exercise system, Romana’s Pilates helps improve posture, flexibility, mobility, strength, balance, and overall body awareness — supporting healthier movement for everyday life.

The Authentic Pilates Tradition

Joseph Pilates was far ahead of his time. He not only created an innovative fitness system with over 500 exercises, but also designed the original apparatus and precise movement principles required to teach the method correctly. Romana’s Pilates continues to preserve this authentic classical system, focusing on individualized instruction tailored to each body’s unique needs and capabilities. When guided by a qualified instructor, the method helps improve strength, posture, mobility, balance, and overall body awareness — allowing you to move, feel, and live better.

Joseph Pilates — Founder of the Pilates Method

Joseph Pilates (1883–1967), the creator of the original Pilates method, developed a revolutionary system of movement known as Contrology. Born in Germany, he overcame childhood health challenges through the study of anatomy, yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, and physical conditioning. His method focused on strengthening the body through controlled movement, proper breathing, spinal alignment, flexibility, and core strength — what he called the “Powerhouse.”

During World War I, Joseph Pilates used his method to help rehabilitate injured soldiers, demonstrating the effectiveness of movement-based recovery and functional strength training. He later opened his New York City studio, where dancers, athletes, performers, and everyday individuals sought his expertise for improved posture, mobility, injury prevention, and overall wellness. Today, Pilates is recognized worldwide as one of the most effective systems for building strength, balance, flexibility, and body awareness.

Romana Kryzanowska — Preserving the Authentic Pilates Method

Romana Kryzanowska (1923–2013) is widely regarded as the foremost guardian of authentic Classical Pilates. After suffering a serious ankle injury as a young ballet dancer, she began training directly under Joseph and Clara Pilates and experienced a complete recovery without surgery.

Romana became Joseph Pilates’ protégé and later inherited his New York studio after his passing. For more than 60 years, she dedicated her life to preserving and teaching the original Pilates method exactly as Joseph intended. Through her work, Romana’s Pilates became known worldwide as the most authentic continuation of the original Classical Pilates system.

Her teaching emphasized precision, control, alignment, breath, and purposeful movement — not simply exercise, but a complete method for improving how the body functions and moves in everyday life.

Sari Mejia Santo — Continuing the Classical Tradition

Sari Mejia Santo, Romana’s daughter, worked directly with Joseph and Clara Pilates from an early age and was affectionately called a “Pilates baby” by Joseph himself. She continues the family legacy by teaching and preserving the original Classical Pilates method around the world.

Fluent in multiple languages and internationally respected as a master instructor, Sari has trained countless teachers and clients globally while maintaining the integrity of Romana’s Pilates.

Cynthia Shipley — Master Teacher Trainer

Cynthia Shipley, co-owner of LifeSpan Pilates in New York City, is one of the leading Romana’s Pilates teacher trainers in the world.
